Whether a cat should live indoors or outdoors is a topic that often sparks debate. It has definitely been a discussion I’ve had with multiple people, and everyone seems very opinionated on it.
Every owner wants what’s best for their cat, but for many, keeping them indoors is one of the safest ways to help them live a long, healthy life.
Outdoor cats face risks that are impossible to control:
– Busy roads,
– Traffic,
– Diseases,
– Parasites,
– Toxic substances,
– Encounters with other animals…
Exploring outside might seem exciting, but it can also expose cats to dangers that simply don’t exist at home.
That doesn’t mean indoor cats have to miss out.
Cats are naturally curious, playful, and intelligent. They still enjoy climbing, scratching, chasing, hiding, and watching the world around them. The difference is that, indoors, it’s up to us to give them opportunities to express those instincts in a safe way.
A sturdy cat tree, interactive toys, puzzle feeders, scratching posts, cosy resting spots, and regular play sessions can all help create an environment where your cat feels engaged and content. Even something as simple as a window perch can provide hours of entertainment as they watch birds, people, and the world outside.
I stand firmly on the opinion that a fulfilling indoor life doesn’t require you to fill your home with expensive products. You can just start by understanding what cats naturally enjoy and making space for those behaviours in everyday life.
With the right environment, indoor cats can live lives that are active, enriching, and every bit as happy as their outdoor counterparts – while enjoying the safety and comfort of home.
I want to round this up by adding that no, you shouldn’t get a cat because it’s an “easy pet” and requires “no maintenance”.
These are myths. Cats need just as much love and attention as other pets!
